[ Is he bound to lie? Certainly. But he figures that Zarina, no matter how earnest she is, won't be entirely honest, either. ]
Convenience. Simplicity.
[ The problem with a game like this is that Danny would love nothing more than to talk about himself, to elaborate. He has to force himself to shut up. ]
[ goddamnit more people are noticing her disappearing from the campfire. she needs to be even sneakier when leaving the campfire now — those tips from ada are going to come in handy. ]
Easy answer. First off, better me than you: I want everyone to escape. Second, I'm a journalist who loves her work. Of course I'll be out and about exploring what I can. I have to know what's out there.
That's how I found coffee after all. And I miss good coffee.

[ Oh no. Swords unsheathed! Meg is nothing if not bored in the fog, and this is interesting. Maybe watching her campfire friends is sometimes more interesting than the dreary fog itself. Watching them, seeing where they go, what direction they go in... ]
Wait, wait, wait, that's NOT an easy answer. Why better YOU than ME? Exactly? You weren't a big murderer back home were you?
[ She doubts it, but she is trying to egg Zarina on a little bit. Why's it better that it's Zarina than Meg? ]
I bet you could write a real mean expose if we ever get out here. Get the Entity arrested or something. We all really like the coffee. Where did you find it again? The gas station? The saloon? [ Zarina never said, but she goes in... sort of maybe that way in the fog. ]
Oh, yes. They all think I'm just a journalist out to help when I'm actually recording my next victim to become famous!
Kidding. You were one of the first here, right? I think you all deserve a break from dying on a hook or a machete. Here to help however I can.
[ which also means sacrificing herself to save everyone else, but. ]
Wish it was that easy too. I don't think jail can hold a spider-like Eldritch abomination, but I don't think I'll make it public. People might actually want to go here for some reason, like research, exploration, or just for the hell of it.
As for the coffee, quick coffee from a machine you head to the gas station. If you want coffee grounds instead you'll have to sneak into the old west and steal it without being caught. I should know, the guy has a hell of a shot if he sees you.
I think you think everyone deserves a break. You don't have to do it, you know. I'm a big girl!
Ew. You think if people knew they'd try to come here willingly? Oh. Like those mega extreme haunted houses??
I found a bag of peanuts by the gas station once. They tasted sort of like ass, but also sort of salty. Worth it. Do they pop up in the saloon or in one of the buildings? You shouldn't go alone, you know.
[ it may or may not what she could be alluding to... not something to tell meg however. she paid for that info. ]
A big girl who attracts killers like a magnet during trials. I can hear you yelling at them across the map sometimes. Makes it easy to find you for a quick pat on the shoulder.
Oh absolutely. I know I'm still new by comparison, but people do crazy things for fame during the year I was picked off. I can see people coming here and recording their experience while thinking they can escape without issues.
[ people should not be aiming for clout sneaking into the fog. bad idea! ]
The saloon mainly. And I'll be all right. Would you believe me if I said I've snuck into worse places back home?
Haven't you ever heard that saying. You gotta Put your own oxygen mask on before you can put someone else's? You'll burn yourself out, Z
That's disgusting. You mean like those dipshit YouTubers? People were doing some stupid shit when I got fogged but I don't know. It'd be nice to think people aren't that stupid.
Hm. [ Hm. ] What's the worst place you've snuck into?
I can't afford to be burned out especially in trials. I'm a big girl that you don't have to worry about too, but we can always say it's watching each others backs that way. I'll be fine.
[ her first response is in a separate text, her second one being: ]
I wish people weren't that stupid, but there's always one. Can't afford to have their blood in my hands if they watch my video despite me warning them not to. I would have still placed it out there in the world.
A highly secured office building in Manhattan. Full of guards on duty and expensive cameras with how rich their CEO is. Had to note down where they all were, time patrol routes, and figure out the papers and IDs I needed to get through without being caught.
[ We're in the same boat with that — she erases that. she also knows, after countless interviews throughout at least a decade, when her question isn't answered. ]
Figure you'd say that, and it's noble of you. You care about your friends just as I do mine.
Promise me to tell me you're safe once you are? And if you're hurt. Don't know how I can help you from my end but I'd like to do something.
[ david isn't a nosey person by nature — sure he likes knowing things, eho doesn't? but generally he's content to brush things off as none of his business and get on with life. (it's a courtesy he wishes more people extended back his way, honestly.) somebody vanishes for ages and comes back with some weird shit? none of his business. suspicious noises from the woods (looking at you, leon and ada)? nothing to do with him. david would argue it's a quality that's done wonders for his dwindling sanity. ]
[ but sometimes? sometimes there's just too many things that don't add up right, a mountain of strange situations over however fucking long that stick out in david's memory. and even then-- even then david would just brush it aside, if it didn't involve a fucking killer. deathslinger might be one of the least worrisome killers outside of trials — by and large keeps to himself, not immune to reason, etc. — but he's still a killer first and foremost, and whatever's going on with him and zarina, it makes david worry. at first he'd assumed it was something to do with the shit she was investigating when she turned up in the fog, but it's more than that. has to be. but the thing about zarina is if she doesn't want to answer a question, she can dance around the topic forever, and she's clearly gone above and beyond to keep this shit under wraps. ]
[ another thing about zarina is she's hard to keep tabs on. usually it's something david likes about her, when she slips away from killers during a trial, but at the moment it kind of drives him insane. takes him four tries to keep an eye on her all the way to glenvale, where she... lets herself in the saloon's backrooms with a key? ]
[ he has no idea how long he's there, watching, waiting. feels like hours and ten minutes at the same time, but eventually david gets his answer in the form of a kiss goodbye in a doorway and that's. it makes more sense than david's happy about, jaw clenched as he watches slinger walk away and zarina go back inside. can't decide if he's the idiot here or if she is. ]
[ david stays put a little longer, waiting until he's sure slinger's gone, and then careful and quiet he makes his way up to that room. hesitates, wonders if maybe he should just go back to camp, but he can't not talk to her about this now that he's seen it. ]
Nobody who would listen to you without significant payment.
[ HUNK doesn't even listen to him half the time, payment or not. ]
I was given the rank through a combination of being the best fit for the job at the time, and Umbrella's influence. They needed someone on the inside and I had the experience. They also assumed I could be trusted.
