a mermaid's diet consists of fish, sea vegetables, crustaceans, and various others but nothing bigger than themselves. tuna fish are fine, but sharks? such would be a feast if zarina could kill it. however, the speed of one — the faster kind especially, she's witnessed it — along with their sharp teeth would kill her if she doesn't swim to safety fast enough. the likes of a giant squid also comes to mind... it's a death sentence to meet one in the first place.
zarina wonders if there's anything as frightening on land. there has to be one, but she's in no rush to meet danger when she barely knows what the new world has to offer. most especially when her new friend — they really are friends! she's sure when she hears caleb says so himself through what he's holding onto — is visiting.
